America designed physical activity out of ordinary life, sold it back as a lifestyle product, and blamed us when we could not keep up.
Two ways a day can contain movement
One connected route links home, transit, work, food, and a walk after dinner. A second route isolates each destination behind repeated vehicle trips and a separate exercise appointment.
Connected ground. In one environment, movement is the route between ordinary destinations. In the other, each destination is isolated and exercise becomes an additional trip.
I have fought my weight for most of my life.
I am one of those people who can gain five pounds by reading a menu. After leaving the Air Force, I eventually reached 245 pounds. Then came the familiar cycle. Lose weight. Gain it back. Try another diet. Pretend this one contained knowledge unavailable to the previous twelve.
What finally worked was painfully ordinary.
I stopped eating so much processed food. I started eating actual food. I exercised. I walked. Most importantly, I kept doing those things after the initial motivation wore off.
The weight came off.
Keeping it off is another matter.
I still have to be intentional. I think about what I eat. I walk six or seven miles when I can. I manufacture movement because, left to the structure of normal American life, there may not be much movement in the day at all.
I accept responsibility for that. Nobody ate the food for me. Nobody carried the weight for me. Nobody could lose it for me.
But personal responsibility explains what an individual must do.
It does not explain why the same problem affects such an enormous percentage of the country.
That requires a second question.
What kind of environment repeatedly produces the same outcome across millions of people?
This is not an argument that people are helpless. It is not an argument that Europe or Japan has solved obesity. It is not an attempt to turn sidewalks into a substitute for self-control.
It is a systems argument.
Individual behavior determines what happens to a person. The environment influences which behaviors are easy, routine, expensive, inconvenient, or nearly invisible.
Both can be true at the same time. Human beings should be able to hold two ideas in their heads without requiring a congressional hearing, although the evidence remains mixed.
The clue was what happened on vacation
I started thinking more seriously about this when I noticed what happens to me when I travel.
My wife and I visit cities in Europe and Japan. I eat well. I drink. I do not spend the trip hunting for steamed vegetables and moral approval.
I also stop doing my normal power walks.
And I often come home lighter.
That sounds backward until you look at what the day actually contains.
I walk to the train. I walk from the station. I climb stairs. I stand. I carry things. I wander into stores and neighborhoods. I walk after meals because the next place is somewhere else, and the ground between the two has not been declared unusable without a vehicle.
I do less formal exercise.
I spend far more of the day moving.
That distinction matters because the body counts movement whether or not we call it a workout.
In much of America, physical activity has been detached from ordinary life. Movement is no longer something that happens while we are doing other things. It has become another thing we must remember to do.
We turned movement into homework.
America made movement an appointment
The normal American pattern is familiar.
We drive to work. We sit at work. We drive to lunch. We sit through lunch. We drive home. Then we change clothes and drive somewhere else so we can walk on a machine.
Apparently, this is progress.
Physical activity now requires a calendar entry, special shoes, protected time, transportation, and enough remaining energy to overcome the day we designed around sitting.
Then we call the result personal choice.
Choice is part of it.
Environment is the rest.
In a walkable place, movement happens because life requires it. People walk to transportation, stores, restaurants, schools, parks, and each other.
They are not necessarily exercising.
They are going somewhere.
The movement accumulates without announcing itself. The body counts it even when an app does not award a digital badge.
A large natural experiment published in 2025 examined people who moved between cities with different levels of walkability. When people moved to more walkable places, they walked about 1,100 additional steps per day on average. When they moved to less walkable places, their activity declined.
Their character did not change when the moving truck arrived.
The environment changed.
The World Health Organization includes transportation, work, household activity, and recreation within its definition of physical activity. The body does not maintain separate accounting systems for treadmill steps and train-station steps.
America did not eliminate movement.
We made it inconvenient.
Then we built an industry to sell it back.
We changed what food is designed to do
The food side is not especially mysterious either, although we have developed a remarkable talent for making it sound that way.
We eat too much processed food.
I could use more diplomatic language, but most people know exactly what I mean by shit food. It is cheap, convenient, available everywhere, easy to consume quickly, and designed to keep the hand moving between the package and the mouth.
The formal category is ultra-processed food. These products are generally assembled from refined ingredients, additives, flavorings, sweeteners, emulsifiers, and substances that do not appear in most home kitchens.
The problem is not simply that they contain calories.
An apple contains calories. So does a steak.
The problem is that some food makes consuming excess calories remarkably easy.
The National Institutes of Health tested this under controlled conditions. Participants alternated between ultra-processed and unprocessed diets while living in a clinical setting. The diets were designed to be comparable in presented calories, sugar, sodium, fat, carbohydrates, protein, and fiber.
On the ultra-processed diet, people ate roughly 500 more calories per day and gained weight.
On the unprocessed diet, they ate less and lost weight.
Nobody instructed them to overeat.
The food changed how much they chose to consume.
That should bother us because it complicates the comforting story that every eating decision begins with a fully informed person calmly exercising independent judgment.
Sometimes it does.
Sometimes the product has been designed by teams of people whose professional objective is to make stopping less likely.
That does not mean every item inside a package is poison. It does not mean eating a cookie represents the final collapse of Western civilization.
It means processing can influence eating behavior in ways the nutrition label does not fully explain.
Food companies are not charities. They make money when we purchase and consume more of their products.
That is not a conspiracy.
It is the business model.
Individually rational decisions can produce a stupid system
The transportation system encourages driving.
The development model separates homes from stores, schools, restaurants, and workplaces.
Restaurants increase portion sizes because customers associate quantity with value.
Delivery services remove the last few steps between wanting food and having it placed at the front door.
Employers create jobs built around screens, meetings, and chairs.
Communities approve housing developments where the grocery store may be visible from the neighborhood entrance but practically unreachable without a car.
Every decision can make sense within its own narrow boundary.
The combined result can still be stupid.
This is a common systems failure. Each participant optimizes a local objective. Nobody owns the aggregate outcome.
The developer maximizes usable land.
The restaurant maximizes perceived value.
The food company maximizes repeat consumption.
The delivery platform minimizes friction.
The employer maximizes desk-based productivity.
The consumer saves time.
Then society receives the integrated result and acts surprised.
Forty percent is not a character defect
More than 40 percent of American adults have obesity. Nearly three-quarters are overweight or have obesity.
Those numbers are too large to explain with a national outbreak of weak character.
Millions of people did not independently wake up and lose the same argument with personal responsibility.
Large, recurring outcomes usually reveal something about the system producing them.
That does not erase individual responsibility.
I changed my weight by changing my behavior. There was no infrastructure program standing beside me at 5:30 in the morning. I still had to get up and walk.
But individual action and environmental influence are not opposing explanations.
They operate together.
A person living near stores, sidewalks, parks, restaurants, schools, and public transportation encounters movement throughout the day.
A person living in a subdivision bordered by six-lane roads, retail islands, parking lots, and several miles of separation encounters a steering wheel.
Both people can choose to exercise.
One must create movement after the environment has removed it.
The other receives some movement simply by participating in daily life.
That difference is not destiny.
It is also not nothing.
The comparison needs guardrails
It would be dishonest to compare central Tokyo with rural Arkansas and declare the matter solved.
America is enormous. Many communities are spread out. Farmers, factory workers, and rural families cannot replace every vehicle trip with a pleasant walk past a bakery.
Distance is real.
Tourism also distorts what Americans see overseas. Visitors tend to stay in city centers, historic districts, and transit-rich neighborhoods. We do not generally book two weeks beside an industrial bypass to study regional land-use policy.
Europe is not uniformly thin. Obesity is increasing there too.
Japan has processed food, sedentary workers, long hours, and health problems of its own.
The point is not that other countries possess superior citizens or magical metabolisms.
The point is that some environments attach more movement to ordinary life.
American geography does not explain why a person must drive to reach a store visible from the entrance of the neighborhood.
It does not explain sidewalks that disappear without warning, schools surrounded by traffic, or zoning rules that separate ordinary destinations from the people who use them.
It does not explain why we routinely build places where walking half a mile is technically possible and practically hostile.
Some car dependence is unavoidable.
Much of it was selected.
We simply made those selections long enough ago that they now feel like weather.
Obesity is not one problem
Obesity is more complicated than food and movement at the individual level.
Genetics matter. Age matters. Medications, illness, disability, sleep, stress, income, working conditions, childhood environment, and mental health can all affect weight.
Some people face barriers I do not face.
Some bodies respond differently.
Some medical conditions make weight management brutally difficult.
That complexity deserves respect.
It should not, however, become a fog machine.
At the population level, the broad mechanics remain visible. People consume more energy than they expend. Much of the available food encourages overconsumption. Much of the built environment suppresses routine movement.
“Eat less and move more” is technically correct.
So is saying a company went bankrupt because it spent more money than it earned.
The arithmetic is not the explanation.
The useful question is what repeatedly drives intake, hunger, convenience, inactivity, and energy expenditure over years.
Why is excess food available at nearly every moment?
Why does ordinary transportation require so little physical movement?
Why do we build communities where exercise must be created separately from life?
Why does maintaining a healthy weight often require constant resistance against the default environment?
Telling people to move more while surrounding them with roads, parking lots, desks, drive-throughs, and delivery apps is not a strategy.
It is a disclaimer.
Good systems require less discipline
I am not arguing that people are helpless.
I would not have lost the weight had I waited for America to redesign itself.
I had to change how I ate. I had to move. I still do.
But a society cannot base public health on everyone displaying exceptional discipline every day for the rest of their lives.
We understand this principle in almost every other field.
In manufacturing, we do not call a process reliable because a careful operator can prevent failure through constant vigilance.
We redesign the process.
In aviation, we do not depend on pilots remembering every possible failure mode without checklists, alarms, procedures, and engineered safeguards.
In technology, we use defaults, guardrails, automation, and feedback because people are inconsistent.
Then the subject becomes weight, and suddenly our entire operating model is willpower.
That is not serious systems thinking.
Good systems make the preferred behavior easier.
Bad systems make the preferred behavior technically possible, provided someone has enough time, money, knowledge, energy, and discipline to fight the defaults.
America has built too many of the second kind.
Why I lose weight on vacation
When I travel, I do not become a different person.
I do not become more disciplined because I crossed an ocean. I do not develop a European metabolism when my passport is stamped.
I enter a different operating environment.
I move because movement is attached to the day.
I walk because that is how I reach things.
I climb stairs because they are there.
I stand because I am not moving directly from one chair to another chair inside a vehicle.
I eat and drink, sometimes impressively, but the entire day is active.
The environment performs part of the work that I must manufacture at home.
Then I return to America, and movement becomes an assignment again.
Obesity is personal.
The choices are personal.
The consequences are extremely personal.
The system producing so much of it is not.
We made consuming excess energy nearly frictionless. We made burning it require planning, transportation, equipment, time, and motivation.
Then we looked at the predictable outcome and concluded that something must be wrong with the people.
Maybe the people are not the only thing that needs to change.
Maybe staying healthy should not require a second job.
Operating observation
Movement is no longer something that happens while we are doing other things. It has become another thing we must remember to do.
